What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a holistic, hands-on form of manual therapy that was developed in the 19th Century by an American Physician, Dr Andrew Taylor Still. Osteopaths look at the body as a whole, treating areas distant to the site of pain to address the root of the problem – ultimately providing longer lasting results.
Osteopaths address the joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues using a range of non-invasive techniques such as soft tissue massage, manipulation, stretching and joint balancing techniques that are gentle and safe. The aim is to restore a sense of balance in the body to allow it to function at its best.
This means that treatment extends beyond the clinic and involves diet, exercise and lifestyle. Osteopathy is an effective form of treatment for sports people, office workers, people with repetitive manual jobs, infants, children and the elderly.
No one person is the same. The Osteopath will tailor the treatment to you and help to determine ‘why’ the problem has arisen, and ‘what’ the Osteopath can do to prevent re-occurrence.
What can I expect when I visit an Osteopath?
When you visit the Osteopath for the first time a full case history will be taken and you will be given an examination. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing and to perform a simple series of movements. The Osteopath will then use a highly developed sense of touch, called palpation, to identify any points of weakness or excessive strain throughout the body. Additional investigations maybe needed such as x-ray or scans. This will allow a full diagnosis and suitable treatment plan to be developed for you.
How many treatments will I need?
Osteopathy is patient centred, which means treatment is geared to you as an individual. The Osteopath will give you an indication of a treatment plan and options during the initial consultation. For some acute conditions one or two treatments maybe all that is necessary. Chronic conditions may need more treatment and ongoing maintenance sessions at 2-6 month intervals.
Can an osteopath lodge my ACC claim?
Yes, your Osteopath can help you with all the paperwork, and lodge the claim for you. Let your Osteopath know if you have had an accident and wish to lodge a claim.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
A formal referral from your GP is not necessary. Whilst patients may be referred to Osteopaths by Doctors, many patients self-refer.
Can I claim Osteopathy on my private health insurance?
Many private health insurance schemes give benefits for Osteopathic treatment. Reimbursement will depend on the insurer and the plan you have chosen. Contact the helpline of your insurance company who will explain the actual benefits and methods of claim for your individual policy.
